Survey on the relationship between "cyber defense power" and business performance by 16 industries! Companies with low cyber defenses also suffer from sluggish performance? Correlation with security investment amount is also clear!

Cyber Security Cloud, Inc. (Headquarters: Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo, Representative Director, President and CEO: Toshihiro Koike, hereinafter “our company”), a global security manufacturer that develops anti-hacker services, conducted a survey of 300 gainfully employed people (including managers) working in 16 industries across the country on the performance of the companies they work for.
With the increasing number of cyber-attacks these days, if security measures are not adequately implemented, the damage caused by cyber-attacks will be enormous, and this will be one of the factors that hinder business expansion. We clarified the relationship between cyber defense strength and business performance using an index called "cyber defense strength," which was formulated as a standard for measuring the degree of security measures in companies.

[TOPICS]
■ Approximately 70% of the respondents in the three industries with high “cyber defense capabilities” answered that their business performance was stable.

■ Industries with low cyber defenses were those with many responses that their business performance was declining and that their company's stock price had declined over the past year.

■ Industries with low cyber defense capabilities also invest less in security measures.
It is suggested that the business performance may deteriorate further when it is damaged by a cyber attack.

■ Cyber Defense Power Ranking

* Measured using a "cyber defense checklist" with 14 check items, and defined as "having a certain level of cyber defense" by obtaining a perfect score of 14 points. Analyze the results of the survey using a checklist and announce the cyber defense power of 16 industries as a ranking.

■ Approximately 70% of the respondents in the three industries with high “cyber defense capabilities” answered that their business performance was stable.
In the three industries with the highest cyber defense capabilities, a relatively large number of respondents answered “Not applicable” to the item “Performance at work has been declining over the past year.” 78.9% for information services/internet-related services, 73.7% for telecommunications/broadcasting/advertising/video/audio/character information production, and finance/insurance, with an average of 75.4%. .

■ Industries with low cyber defenses were those with many responses that their business performance was declining and their company's stock price was declining over the past year.
In the question about business performance, the most common responses to the item “Performance at work has been declining over the past year” were “Applicable” to lifestyle-related service industry, travel industry, entertainment industry (73.7%), and lodging/restaurant service industry (63.2%) and the transportation/postal industry (52.6%), all three industries have insufficient cyber defense capabilities.
Next, the industries where most of the respondents answered “Applicable” to the item “The stock price of the company where I work has declined over the past year” was the manufacturing industry (42.1%), agriculture, forestry, fishery, mining, quarrying, and gravel gathering industry (38.9%), lodging/restaurant service industry (36.8%), life-related service industry/travel industry/entertainment industry (26.3%), the results are similar to the question about performance decline. There are various factors that contribute to the decline in business performance and stock price, but it was found that there is a certain correlation with the ranking of cyber defense power.
In particular, although COVID-19 has had a major impact on recent sluggish performance in the accommodation, food service, life-related service, travel, and entertainment industries, it is also an industry that handles customers' personal information and credit card information. , there is a possibility that a further decline in performance will be caused in the event of a cyber-attack.

■ Industries with low cyber defense capabilities also invest less in security measures.
It is suggested that the business performance may deteriorate further when it is damaged by a cyber attack.

Next, when we surveyed the amount of investment in security measures, the industries in which many people answered that they spend more than 1 million yen on their annual security budget received a perfect score of 14 points in the cyber defense capability survey. Information service/internet-related services (31.6%), finance/insurance (26.3%), communications/broadcasting/advertising/video/audio/character information production (21.1%), earning 13 points. school education/learning support (27.8%).

In industries where business performance is declining, investment in security measures has been postponed, and sufficient security measures are considered to be neglected. From this, we can see that the reform of security awareness has not progressed yet, and the priority of security measures is low.
There are many cases in which companies with insufficient cyber security measures have been severely damaged by cyber attacks and lost the trust of their customers, leading to a significant decline in business performance. As a means of preventing corporate performance from declining, we recommend that companies reaffirm the importance of cyber security and further strengthen their cyber defense capabilities.

■ Comment from Yoji Watanabe, Representative Director, CTO of Cyber Security Cloud, Inc.
It can be said that industries with high cyber defense capabilities have a high level of security awareness across the industry, and the amount of investment in security is higher than in other industries. Industries with low cyber defenses tend to place a low priority on security and put off investing in security. In recent years, when damage is spreading to places closer to consumers, such as cyber attacks on hospitals in Osaka, it is important for each individual to be aware of security and select companies and services that have security measures in place. It is likely that industries with low cyber defenses will be encouraged to take countermeasures.
