Cyber Security Cloud Releases Cyber Attack Detection Report for July-August 2020: Cyber attacks increased by 30% in July-August, including the summer holidays, compared to the average number of attacks detected in the first half of 2020

Cyber Security Cloud, Inc. (Headquarters: Shibuya-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Akira Ohno; hereinafter referred to as "Cyber Security Cloud") is pleased to announce its cyber attack detection report covering the period from July 1 to August 31, 2020, including the Obon holiday and other long holidays. This data was compiled, analyzed, and calculated from attack logs observed by "Shadankun," Cloud-based WAF that visualizes and blocks cyber attacks on websites, and "WafCharm," an AWS WAF automated operation service provided by Cyber Security Cloud.

<Survey Overview>
・Survey period: July 1, 2020 to August 31, 2020
・Survey target: User accounts using "Shadankun" and "WafCharm"
- Research method: Analysis of attack logs observed by "Shadankun" and "WafCharm"

■ Attack situation
<Comparison of the number of detected cyber attacks>

From July 1 to August 31, 2020, including the Obon holiday period, an average of 32,238,832 cyber attacks were detected per month against companies that use our services (" Shadankun" and "WafCharm").
Compared to the average number of cyber attacks detected in the first half of 2020, this represents an increase of more than 30%, due to an increase in "web attacks" classified as attacks against vulnerabilities in the software that makes up web servers, "web scans" which are methods of searching and investigating targets of attack or searching for vulnerabilities through simple random attacks, and "SQL injections" which intentionally exploit security flaws in applications to manipulate systems.
Furthermore, on August 18, 2020, 1,746,611 cyber attacks were detected, the highest number of detections in 2020, and on the 7th of the same month, 1,647,089 attacks were detected, the second highest number of detections.

The reason for this increase in the number of attacks in July and August is likely due to the fact that the spread of COVID-19 infections has again led to companies continuing to work remotely for a longer period, and that offices tend to be less staffed in July and August as employees take summer vacation, so it is highly likely that cyber attacks were targeted at these times.
Furthermore, the results of a survey conducted in August 2020 on the period from the occurrence of a cyberattack to its detection and disclosure showed that it took more than 90 days for more than 50% of corporations and organizations to detect a cyberattack, and that it took an average of 383 days from the time of the cyberattack to its detection. Therefore, it is believed that even under these circumstances, there are many cases where attacks are not discovered.
Cyber attacks are likely to increase further as we approach the New Year holidays, so in order to prevent such incidents from occurring, it is important to review your company's cybersecurity as soon as possible.

In order to protect corporate websites from the ever-increasing threat of cyber attacks, we will continue to work hard to support the creation of an environment where users can use our services with peace of mind, and strive to protect corporate businesses.
